Territory:
Piazza Armerina is Known worldwide for the mosaics of the Roman Villa of Casale.
Because of their figurative style, realism of the subjects, and range of colours, they
constitute a document of inestimable artistic value and rare font of Knowlege regarding
the customs and practices of Roman period.
Definitively brought to light in the 1950's by Professor Vinicio Gentili of the Department
of Antiquities of Eastern Sicily, the villa's mosaics, after nearly a century of sporadic
research, now occupy a surface area of over 3.500 m2.
The villa, built between the third and fourth centuries a.d., probably by Emperor Massimiliano
Erculeo, was buried by a mudslide due to a great flood in 1161. This was the year in which
the Lombard barons of Piazza Armerina rebelled against William I and destroyed the Saracen
villas surrounding the town.
The monument, following the natural flow of the terrain, has terraced buildings and consists
of four grouppings of rooms, galleries, and peristyles: the principle entrance and the thermal
area; the peristyle whit rooms used as linving and guest areas; the privates rooms and the
great basilica; the triclinium and the elliptical courtyard.
Visiting the villa is greatly facilitated by an ingenious sysstem of walkways that allows one
to admire from above the largest and most valuable mosaic pavement complex ever discovered.
